Takashi Sakai (1978, Nagano, Japan) is a Japanese artist living and working in Japan. He graduated from Tama Art University, majoring in oil painting in 2003.
“Each line I draw with a ballpoint pen has a direction, and the still images contain a writhing energy. By layering them like layers of paint, a unique layer is created on the thin paper.
This drawing method is also a ritual to bring to the surface the ancient aesthetics sleeping in the depths of consciousness, using personal memories and visions as entrances. I believe that aesthetics are rooted in the awe of nature in primitive religions and the familiarity with death, which was more familiar to us.
In addition, I believe that my work is a hybrid of the original sense of the Japanese, who have the history and culture of sumi-e, caricatures, and manga, and the experience of studying Oil painting at an art university”.
